Perception and Prejudice – a talk by Niklas Forsberg at Queens College, Oxford University, Saturday 28 April 2018

Centre member Niklas Forsberg will present a paper at the conference “Moral Perception in Iris Murdoch” at Queens College, Oxford University, University on Saturday 28 April, 2018. Forsberg’s paper is an examination of the concept of seeing as it occurs in Murdoch’s well-known claim that “I can only choose within a world I cansee.” In his talk, Forsberg will explore the relationship between this conception of perception with Murdoch’s understanding of metaphysics. For Murdoch, metaphysics means something like the ground on which we stand, or the Horizon from where we look, or the Zeitgeist that guides us even if we are unaware of it. Learning to see would thus mean something like struggle to lay bare the assumptions on which my judgements rest – to unravel one’s prejudices.
